Appropriate tool for a connector

I find the DigiKey ordering platform difficult to use! My questions are pretty simple and I would like corroboration that this will work for my intended purpose before I spend $75.

  1. Do these crimping pliers work with this open barrel connector?
  2. My unusual application requires crimping this connector onto an existing 12.5 AWG wire. I do not have access to the butt end.

I plan to order thousands of connectors once I verify that my application works. Thank you!

Hello mbwhitt1967, welcome to the DigiKey TechForum,

The only way we can guarantee that a crimp tool will work is if it is recommended from the same manufacturer, the crimp tool (ATHT-004) you are looking at and the pigtail connector (62308-2) are from two different manufacturer’s. According to the manufacturer’s product page for the 62308-2 (linked HERE), the recommended crimp tooling are linked below:
7-2335336-7

7-4150036-7

7-2150133-7

4150036-2

This likely derives from the electronic components industry and the commercial production operations that it supports being inherently more complex than the consumer goods markets with which most people are accustomed.

This is something that DigiKey cannot provide. Per the terms of sale, determining suitability for purpose is ultimately the responsibility of those who purchase the product. We can offer guidance and advice, but the choice and burden of qualification is ultimately yours.

Not likely. Tooling adapted for insulated, closed-barrel terminals typically have crimp cavities designed to simply flatten a round barrel into an oval shape, whereas tooling for open-barrel crimps of this sort usually have a pointed cavity designed to fold the open ends of the crimp together in a controlled manner. The datasheet linked on this item does a reasonable job of highlighting the differences.

As mentioned in this post and others, manufacturers do not always offer approved manual tooling due to operator influence on the quality of the result, and economic considerations that apply in a production context.
