Beagle Bone Black Boot Issue

My Beagle Bone Black that was working just fine now refuses to boot.

After power is applied using the barrel jack and 5V supply, the PWR led next to the barrel jack lights up, but nothing else does.

Up to this point, I had been trying to get the 7" NewHaven display working. I was going to through some of the other posts on this site. One of the posts mentioned that the eMMC might be interfering, so I followed those steps:

[[BeagleBone] Newhaven NHD-7.0CTP-CAPE] ([BeagleBone] Newhaven NHD-7.0CTP-CAPE)

Shortly after that (can’t remember if it was immediately, or several more boot/configuration attempts after that), that the device stopped booting at all.

Holding down S2 during power up doesn’t affect anything. Pressing S1 or S3 also does nothing.

With or without an SD card in the slot, the USER leds are always dark.

Any ideas?

@jeffdk,

Please re-test with this image flashed to a microSD, with no cape plugged in:

https://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#Stretch_IOT_Snapshot

Regards,

Thanks @RobertCNelson for the quick reply!

I did as you suggested, re-tested with the image flashed to a microSD, and no cape.

The results are unchanged, the board does not boot. No flashing of user lights to indicate access of the SD card. I tried both the microSD and eMMC flasher images.

Do I need to press the S2 button to select the boot options? I tried both with and without pressing the S2 switch.

Thanks again!

@jeffdk, you don’t need to hit the S2 button unless there is something in the eMMC blocking bootup.

Did you use https://www.balena.io/etcher/ when you wrote the image to the microSD card?

Regards,

Yes, I used the balena etcher software. It works great.

@jeffdk, i’d start the RMA process for this board, it seems to be having issues booting up with our beagleboard.org images.

Regards,

1 Like

OK, thanks again for your help! I’ll go through the RMA process.

Jeff

One last question: Would connecting to the RS232 port header give us any useful information?

@jeffdk,

It might, but one of the first things that u-boot does is turn on one of the 4 other led’s…

So i’d expect some blinking lights.

Regards,

I connected to the BBB serial header this morning with PuTTY and a borrowed USB to 3.3V serial port. I’m getting a screen full of “C”! Can this BBB be brought back to life?
image

@jeffdk, that is expected… When the eMMC is blank, and no microSD is installed. The am335x’s bootrom transmit’s a C character over the uart attempting to boot over the serial port. So your board is at-least trying to boot from the eMMC.

Try another microSD card with: https://elinux.org/Beagleboard:BeagleBoneBlack_Debian#Stretch_IOT_Snapshot

Regards,

@RobertCNelson,

With the Stretch_IOT_Snapshot,eMMC flasher download, this is what I am getting now…
The following contains three boot attempts.

I also downloaded the U-Boot SPL (only the first two files: u-boot-spl.bin and u-boot.img) as shown in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3y1LMNPoaJI. Files were downloaded from https://github.com/niekiran/EmbeddedLinuxBBB. Not much was happening in the way of booting before then. Or maybe I wasn’t holding the boot button long enough. Are these boot files generic enough for my purposes?

@RobertCNelson,

Sorry just realized from my own post, that the SD card had the wrong files on it (thus the unrecognized file system). I’m re-imaging with the etcher software.

@RobertCNelson,

this is the result now…

Are their any pins bent on your microSD slot? The bootrom is able to pull the files off the microSD, but as soon as u-boot tries to access the device it fails. (the bootrom access the microSD in the most simple setup, where as u-boot is configured to fully take advantaged of the device.)

Regards,

@RobertCNelson,

Sure enough, one pin was bent up and not making contact with the SD card. I bent it down and now am able to boot from the SD card! Thank you so much! :joy:
