Cable glands are a device that allows the passthrough of a cable into or out of an enclosure and maintain the ingress protection of the enclosure and it’s associated UL rating if applicable.
Before installation, check to see what type of cable gland is being used. Some come with a nut and others do not. Those that do not, are intended to have the passthrough hole be threaded.
Below are instructions for the installation of Heyco Cable Gland 3720-M3207-ND into Hammond enclosure 164-EJ863LG-ND.
First mark the position of the hole with a pen and punch tool 66310-ND.
Next add cutting oil when drilling out the hole. If using a step drill bit, 1742-25950-ND, wrap the bit in masking tape to make sure the hole is not enlarged bigger than what is needed. This hole is being cut to 5/32".
Next use a deburring tool, 40-DB-5-ND, to remove shavings from the hole.
If using a cable gland that does not come with a nut to secure the cable gland from the inside, use the tap and die to create the threads.
Next install the cable gland, 3720-M3207-ND, and then pass through the cable.
Once the cable is installed, tighten the outside nut to grip the cable. This will insure that the cable does not move, and initiates the ingress protection of the cable gland. The above photos show the difference between a tightened and untightened cable gland.
Other types of cable glands are shielded, use these when using shielded cables.
