Hi there,
(I hope my question is not too much off-topic…)
I am trying to use the DCA75 software provided by Peak Elec on a Linux Mint 21.3 PC
With Wine, the program runs but I cannot connect the DCA75 on USB
With VirtualBox, I have to install an image of a Win version. I am looking for the lightest possible version (starting with Win 7 or even XP) because that PC is rather old and rather slow.
Besides, I do not have to install a lot of program on that VirtualBox.
Since I am almost a noob in Linux, any guidance would be appreciated.
Because Wine is simply a compatibility layer not an emulator, there has to be native Linux drivers for any hardware you want to use. Even when a manufacturer supplies a native Linux driver, if the manufacturer did not write it with Wine use in mind it will not work in Wine.
Ideally, if an application runs fine in Windows, it should run fine on the same hardware using Wine, provided native drivers for your hardware are installed and equivalent to the Windows drivers. Open source Linux graphics drivers in particular are often inadequate to run games that work fine on the same hardware in Windows. If there is no native driver for your hardware, Wine will not be able to use it.
From the manufacture there software supports: PC software on a USB Flash Drive for Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP.
XP might be the easiest, just make sure to firewall your WinXP VM on Linux so it doesn’t have access to the internet. For data storage it might be best to share your Linux box (thru samba) as the only network connection to the VM. (Forgot, VirtualBox has a concept of shared storage, so you can use that over Samba)…
