Do I need to use an absolute encoder to maintain position without power?

There are many times more incremental optical encoders available, with far fewer choices for absolute encoders. I need to maintain position (180° max angle) without any power, and need it to track properly if the shaft is moved without power being present. Top that off with very limited space and must be centerless shaft (must go over existing shaft).

Hi @bri4eng ,

Thank you for contacting Digi-Key TechForum! It looks like absolute is the way to go for your application, according to the first paragraph of below post. Non-absolute would only work in an application where it would first follow an initialization or homing process once power is back on, but wouldn’t maintain position without power being present.
