In our previous article, we discussed basic drive topologies such as low-side and high-side MOSFET drive configurations. However, as power devices evolve toward higher switching speeds and improved efficiency, traditional low- and high-side drive topologies may fall short in terms of performance and reliability.
In such scenarios, advanced drive topologies like push-pull and bootstrap drive offer optimized solutions, along with several additional application benefits.
This article focuses on two important drive configurations: push-pull drive and bootstrap drive, exploring their working principles, advantages, design considerations, and practical use cases.
1. Push-Pull Drive
A push-pull drive consists of two MOSFETs or bipolar transistors forming a complementary output pair, alternately driving the gate voltage up or down.
It is suitable for gate driver IC output stages (e.g., Microchip TC4420 and TC4429), high-frequency/high-current switching drives (e.g., PWM control, motor control), and similar applications.
Advantages
- Fast switching Speed (fast charging/discharging of gate capacitance)
- Strong drive capability (>2A)
- Reduced crossover losses
Limitations
- Requires careful dead-time management to prevent shoot-through current
- Slightly more expensive, complex to control
Design Considerations

1. Shoot-through Prevention
In the design considerations for push-pull drivers, it is important to prevent shoot-through.
In a push-pull configuration, the two drivers need to alternate conduction; if an appropriate dead time is not set, it may result in both the upper and lower drivers conducting simultaneously, causing a short circuit. -
2. Controlled Switching Speed
Excessive switching speed can lead to electromagnetic interference (EMI) and oscillation. By adjusting the gate resistor value, the switching speed can be controlled, thereby reducing EMI. -
3. Appropriate drive current
Select an appropriate drive current based on the MOSFET’s gate charge and required switching speed. Ensure the driver has sufficient current capability to charge/discharge the gate quickly. -
4. PCB layout
For PCB layout, minimize parasitic inductance and capacitance in the drive path to maintain signal integrity and avoid EMI issues.
Tech Tip: Half-bridge drivers usually include circuitry to prevent shoot-through. However, additional dead-time delays may be required. This can be achieved by including limits on the associated microcontroller’s PWM signal.
On a related note, be sure to limit the PWM duty cycle to allow time for the bootstrap capacitor to charge.
Example Circuit: Transistor-Based Push-Pull Drive
In the example above, a transistor-based low-side push-pull drive circuit is shown. Transistors such as 8050 or 8550, or B772 and D882, can be used. The test power supply here is DC 12V, so no additional drive voltage is needed. If the load voltage exceeds the control voltage, the drive voltage must be reduced to stay within the MOSFET’s Vgs limits.

2. Bootstrap drive
A bootstrap drive uses a capacitor to store the voltage difference when the low-side MOSFET is on, then uses this voltage to drive the high-side N-MOSFET.
It is suitable for half-bridge or full-bridge circuits (e.g., inverters, motor drives) and scenarios requiring elevated Vgs for high-side MOSFETs.
Advantages
- Lower Rds(on) for higher efficiency (uses N-MOSFETs for high-side switching )
- Compact and cost-effective
Limitations
- Cannot maintain continuous high-side ON time
- Needs periodic low-side conduction to recharge bootstrap capacitor
- Limited by PWM duty cycle (sufficient time must be allocated for capacitor charging)
Design Considerations

1. Bootstrap Capacitor Selection (C_boot)
Its capacitance should be at least 10 times the high-side MOSFET’s gate capacitance to ensure sufficient charge during switching. Use multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) with low equivalent series resistance (ESR) and inductance (ESL) to reduce voltage ripple and improve reliability. -
2. Bootstrap Diode Selection
Choose a Schottky diode with low forward voltage drop and fast recovery to minimize power loss and improve switching speed. -
3. Bootstrap Resistor (R_boot)
Include a bootstrap resistor (R_boot) to limit peak current during startup, protecting the diode. Balance the resistor value between charging time and current limiting to avoid excessive delay or high inrush current. -
4. PCB layout
Place the bootstrap capacitor and diode as close as possible to the driver IC to minimize parasitic inductance and resistance. Reduce loop area for high-current paths to lower EMI and voltage spikes. -
5. Conduction Time Limitation
Bootstrap circuits are unsuitable for prolonged high-side MOSFET conduction, as the capacitor may not sustain sufficient voltage. For low-frequency or static applications, consider isolated drive solutions.
Example Circuit: Bootstrap-Based High-Side Drive
The example above shows a simplified high-side MOSFET gate drive circuit for brushed or brushless motor H-bridges or three-phase H-bridges.
Bootstrap capacitor C1 supplies energy for gate drive, sourced directly from the optocoupler’s output transistor. The circuit uses a common-collector configuration, with an NPN transistor pulling the MOSFET gate up to the bootstrap voltage. During turn-off, resistor R2 discharges the MOSFET gate through current-limiting resistor R4.
