This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Fiber Optic Transmitters - Discrete category on DigiKey.com
Discrete fiber optic transmitters are a light source such as an LED or laser and an adaptive housing used to inject a signal into a fiber optic cable. The device contains no drive circuitry. The light source is differentiated by wavelength, spectral bandwidth, forward voltage, forward current, and DC reverse voltage. Adaptive housings may accommodate connector types such as FC, PC, SC, SMA, ST, TOSLINK, Versatile link, and connector-less solutions.
SelectionCharacteristics
Wavelength: Typically indicates the center or nominal frequency the device was designed for use with.
Spectral Bandwidth: The range of optical wavelengths contained in a transmitter’s output.
Voltage - Forward (Vf) (Typ) : Typically this indicates the nominal voltage seen under manufacturer specified test conditions.
Current - DC Forward (If) (Max) : Typically this represents the maximum current to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this current may damage the device and/or other system components.
Voltage - DC Reverse (Vr) (Max): The maximum voltage that a device is rated to withstand in a reverse-biased or “blocking” mode.
Capacitance: A measurement of the device’s ability to store an electrical charge. It is measured in Farads (F) and uses the metric system for values.
Connector Type: Indicates the compatible fiber optic connection type.
