Hatch VS12-75WD Power Supply Alternative?

So Hatch has dxed this power supply we use, the VS12-75WD. Are there any alternatives that do the same thing? Its a 75w power supply with dimmable loop. We use them in adjustable lightsources. Thanks,

Hello cvsisinthehouse,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.
I’m sorry, but I do not see a cross to the Hatch power supply, with the dimming option.

Thank you David

Hello cvsisinthehouse,

Halogen and other incandescent lamps are increasingly difficult to locate.

Have you considered retrograding your equipment? As an example, please see the links below for potential power supplies. This is a fast-growing area with many options to explore.

Please let us know if we can assist.

Best Wishes,

APDahlen

How can I retrograde a lightsource? I will check out these links.

I have removed your phone number from your reply. As this is a public forum others may use the number provided.

Where would this light be used, inside or outside?

Its in an adjustable light lightsource that is part of our video otoscopes for pets.

They use 75W halogen bulbs. Here is a picture of one.

Hello @cvsisinthehouse,

Now I better understand your problem.

We need to ask how much time and effort should be put into this device. Options include:

  • purchase one of the few remaining transformers which are increasingly difficult to locate
  • salvage a replacement transformer
  • purchase a new light source assuming the existing scope head is compatible with the new unit
  • jumper the internals and use an external variable transformer or solid-state light dimmer
  • redesign the internals to preserve the internal variable brightness control for the existing halogen lamp
  • redesign the internals to use the LED equivalent of the original halogen (assumes suitable drop-in replacement is available with similar cooling requirements as well as focal point for light transmission)

Each option comes with its own set of problems in terms of safety, required skill level, elegance, cost, and time.

If you are considering the last few options, please reply with the lamp type. By chance is it an MR16?

Sincerely,

Aaron

Hi Aaron, we fix these lightsources, so I would need a bunch. The bulb is Osram HLX 64615 EFN 12v 75W

I bought a VS12-60WD and put a 50 watt bulb in but it doesnt seem to work.

thanks,

Hello @cvsisinthehouse,

Understood, since you are repairing multiple units there is room for experimentation.

As a starting point may I recommend this module. The wiring is relatively simple as seen in this sketch from the datasheet.

You may be able to reuse the existing potentiometer provided it is 100 k at 1 W, if not, you can select one from this list. For added safety use a potentiometer with plastic shaft. Also, for safety, be sure to use the original fuse or add an internal fuse.

Finally, be sure to consult a lawyer for the liability of modifying existing equipment.

Sincerely,

Aaron

P.S. I once worked in a photonics lab. At one point we had a demonstration LED assembly for a light house. This was a design problem for the manufacturer as the LEDs had to be in the same place as the original tungsten filament. If not, the LED would not focus correctly through the existing lens.

Insofar as the reference device is designed for 12V output and presumably incorporates isolation, use of a non-isolated proportional-output SSR would likely involve some compromises.

This compatibility list for an MR16 LED retrofit lamp would appear to contain references to other manufacturer’s products of a similar sort. It’s possible that a person might use it to track down something of similar size & spec with the local dimming function from a different source, or for which stock is available.

Good catch, @rick_1976,

The lamp is indeed 12 VDC Ref: 74 W VS12-60WD.

My sincere apologies to @cvsisinthehouse for missing that fact. The PHS120A10 will not work in this application.

Originally, I did recommend a LED retrofit, however this may or may not work given the filament to light pipe requirements. The lamp is marketed with “precise filament alignment.” I’m led to believe this is like the light-house lamp I mentioned where the filament must be at the correct focal point of the lens for effective light transfer.

Thoughts?

Cordially,

Aaron

LED retrofit may indeed bring complications from an optical standpoint, and changes (but doesn’t really solve) the initial issue of ballast/driver selection.

I referenced the compatibility list for an LED lamp in the interest of pointing to possible alternative suppliers of driver/ballast products. Given the context of the inquiry (service of extant products in service) the available latitude for more creative solutions seems limited.

Agree @rick_1976,

The best DigiKey solution I’ve found is a small 12 VDC medical approved supply. Unfortunately, devices in this class are not variable (dimmable).

I did a related search on dental lamps. I may have found a solution in the Keystone KTET-75-1 series. It’s worth a look, @cvsisinthehouse.

What is a delta lamp?

Hello @cvsisinthehouse

Context please?

Sincerely,

Aaron

sorry, just now see its dental, not delta
