Help finding compact board to wire assembly

Hi all, I’m looking for a cable for connecting a camera module to a board. The camera is on a gimbal and due to the axis of rotation a FPC ribbon is not suitable. I’m looking for a 20 pos shielded cable similar to what’s shown in the image below.

The closest I could find is a round jacketed ribbon cable from 3M: MC20R-100-ND (Digikey part no). This can then be terminated with an IDC connector such as this: HDM20H-ND

In an ideal world there would be a thinner alternative, and even better if it’s already terminated with a connector like a Hirose DF52. In this case and overall length of 3" would be suitable. If anyone has any pointers it’d be really appreciated

Hey Ed1,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.

The only 20 position cable with connector assemblies we currently have in stock are in the following link: Rectangular Cable Assemblies | Electronic Components Distributor DigiKey

Unfortunately none of those options have the Hirose DF52 on them and only few of them have that jacket that encompasses all the conductors.

We have the DF52-20P-0.8C that is 20 position in stock and we also have the crimpable contacts for it DF52-2832PCF however not as part of a full assembly.

Since the DF52-2832PCF takes 28 to 32AWG conductors we have some multi conductor wire at 20 conductors but only as small as 28AWG though the shortest one of those is 100ft long 3320SL005-ND and it has a braid type shield.

We have a 1ft version of the MC20R-100-ND in part MC20R-1-ND. If you like this cable and the connector HDM20H-ND you could submit a request to our custom.orders@digikey.com with your request for a custom assembly. You can specify the parameters of the assembly in more detail and if you can submit the drawing with all the preferred specs that would be ideal.

Hope that helps.

Hi Ifran, thanks for sending those links, they’re very helpful. The rectangular connector link lead me to 5378-82069-100B-02-D-ND which uses micro coaxial cables which seem perfect for size and shielding but the length is a bit too long. I’m considering making my own assemblies using micro coaxial cables but at the same time I want to avoid manually crimping 40 terminations per assembly during the prototyping phase. are you familiar with any solderless wire to board connectors? I’m not sure if this is the correct term, but I’m picturing a cross between a Hirose DF52 and a Wago. If this isn’t viable I’ll stick with the initial idea of the 3M cable with an IPC connector during the prototyping stage then get Digikey to do the assemblies in the future.

Hi again Ed,

I think you mean something like WM7876-ND which is basically a terminal block where you can just insert the conductors to each position and screw them down. This one does take 28AWG and obviously the wire termination is solderless but you’d have to solder the through hole terminals of the block itself to the board. I’m not sure what kind of pitch you’re working with on your prototype board but this one is 0.138" or 3.5mm. If that pitch isn’t right you can take a look at similar options to this style of wire to board terminal block in link here and see if we have the type of pitch you need for your prototype board.
Just make sure they can take that 28AWG wire.
