Laser and eye damage

------Question for 1057 Please Put your question below------

Is the laser from 1057 dangerous for your eyes? 5 mW is not good for your eyes, but it has a lense that spreads the intensity out. Thanks

Hello,
Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum. With or without a lens to spread the intensity it’s best to avoid direct eye exposure and I believe this warning will be stamped directly on the body of the laser.

Hello.

But what about standing like 2-3 meter from the laser with the lens. Isnt det intensity so low it should’nt be dangerous? Are there no datasheet adressing these things?

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately, there are no datasheets addressing these types of issues. I suggest following the manufacturer warning and avoid direct exposure regardless of distance.

Thank you for your reply. Final question. It says 5 mW of power, but since it is a line laser is that the output at the end of the laser? There should be a difference of intensity between line and dot laser, right?

5 mW: (3B 5 mW → 499 mW) Safety of Class 3B visible-beam lasers

Adafruit says: These encapsulated laser diodes are Class IIIa 5mW, with a 650nm red wavelength.

So they have this 5 mW Laser in the 1 mW → 4.99 mW classification: Safety of Class 3R visible-beam lasers
