I Tried to hook these a single led light to a 12v power source and it smoked the light. Are amps a factor? also tried a single light with a 12v dc driver…same result. What am I missing here?

Yes, current flow through the LED is a factor. One of the main ones, actually. Devices such as this need to be driven using a current source, rather than a voltage source. Particularly since many “12 volt” sources are actually closer to 14.

Moreover, as a high power lighting-class LED this device requires very careful attention to thermal management. Without that, it will burn up in a matter of a few seconds to a few minutes, even if driven properly from an electrical point of view. This document offers information on that topic.
