The MOV in my FoodSaver blew after a neighborhood surge. I measured it as 8mm and has the markings “K175” “15 44”. Is there an appropriate replacement part for this varistor?
If it helps, the fuse connected to the MOV is rated 250 VAC and 125VDC max.
Generally when I see an MOV exploded that badly, the surge far exceeded the MOVs capability to protect the device.
Virtually all circuits with MOVs will work properly with the MOV removed (you only lose surge protection).
Does the device still function with the MOV removed?
If not, then you should fix the other parts of the circuit first before installing a new MOV.
For the part ID, I believe it is an EPCOS StandarD series, 175 VRMS, MOV and the part type is:
SIOV-S??K175
The diameter of the part indicates the power handling capability and replaces the “??” I put in the part number above.
| Part Type | Ordering code | Diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| S05K175 | B72205S0171K101 | 5 |
| S07K175 | B72207S0171K101 | 7 |
| S10K175 | B72210S0171K101 | 10 |
| S14K175 | B72214S0171K101 | 14 |
| S20K175 | B72220S0171K101 | 20 |
The MOVs @PaulHutch listed would’ve had a K175 part marking on them, with B72207S0171K101 having a 7.5mm diameter approx.
Pretty sure the 175 represents the maximum AC Voltage rating.
