I want to replace this MOV that has failed on a range hood after a surge. The MOV specs are 140V 175J. I have not found an MOV in DigiKey with the same specs. Is there another available that I could safely use?
I measured the diameter as 15.8mm
Welcome to the forum.
If possible keep the voltage rating the same and use a substitute with a different Joule rating.
A higher Joule rating will make the MOV last longer but at the expense of letting more surge through to the downstream electronics over time.
A lower Joule rating will make the MOV fail sooner but will let less surge through to the downstream electronics over time.
I currently don’t have time to lookup a substitute but I did locate a data sheet.
Hello Shellic123,
I believe you have the information on the markings incorrect.
This looks like 14K175, which would be 14mm inner disc, which would be about 16mm outside diameter. K=10%. 175 would be the AC voltage rating.
Looking at the link PaulHutch posted, it spells out the ratings for this part.
Click here for 495-4433-ND. This would be a very good match to those ratings.
If you can’t find the exact item, this should be a good alternate.
Please check the datasheet.
Hello @Shellic123
Welcome to the TechForum
The part that PaulHutch had posted would be that part from the manufacturer, but we do not carry it.
I did find an alternative to that part in our system, and it is part number 495-1439-ND
MFR PART # | B72214S2171K101 |
---|---|
DIGIKEY PART # | 495-1439-ND |
MANUFACTURER | EPCOS - TDK Electronics |
DESCRIPTION | VARISTOR 270V 6KA DISC 14MM |
DATASHEET | Click Here |
I’ll second the 495-1439-ND as it matches the higher max current and energy spec (6kA vs. 4.5kA and 70 joules vs. 43 joules, respectively) of your device. The other specs are about the same.
Edit: I just read @PaulHutch’s comments about joule ratings, and he’s brought in an interesting perspective that I had not thought about. Not sure what I think of it, but good food for thought.
Thank you for the correction. It seems the other posts are looking for MOVs with the wrong specs. Ill pass it on.
David_1768 informed me that the specs were incorrect for that MOV. What would be a good replacement for an MOV for a 14mm inner disc, 10% tolerance, and 175 nominal voltage?
