I have searched everywhere on what LED is used in the ram LED tail lights. can anyone lead me in the right direction as far as what it could possibly be?
I have a picture of the inside LED array from a video. I haven’t taken mine apart yet (I need to use my truck every day).
I did some research but have not been able to find the actual LED part number used in these tail lights. I did find a forum on changing these tail lights out and various after market versions. on that site they mentioned that the LED bulb could not be replaced in repairs but did not give a reason why.
Hopefully someone else will see this and help fill in the blanks on whether there is some type of id molded into these or if they have some odd resistance that is checked by RAM computer system.
I am going to order some aftermarket tail lights but still take these apart. Ill document what I find inside and post some more info and pictures when I can. Maybe that will help identify the type of LED
Yours probably is not this particular LED, but from your image it looks like this package type, often referred to as a “Piranha” or “Superflux” LED package.
It would be surprising if each LED were designed for 12V, as that usually requires an integrated resistor, so there’s probably either external resistors located somewhere on that structure or the LEDs are driven by a current-controlling integrated circuit somewhere nearby.
Yes, I second @David_1528 . The unit must be driven by a constant current source(s) (well, in case of RAM or Chuck Norris, the LEDs do not need current limiting - that is for weak LEDs only).
It seems from the picture that some LEDs are connected in series, some are independent. However, it should be quite safe to just replace with a LED that “looks same”. Anyway, make sure first that the LEDs are the ones that are failing, not a connector somewhere.
Cheers, heke
I just took the tail light apart and have some betterpictures that may help pinpoint the exact LED or something close. If there is something close, I can just change all of them.
The last picture shows what LEDs light up during breaking (dont have one that shows the running lights unfortunately). Some LEDs are not lighting for just the brake light function, but otheras arent lighting for either. The brake light and running light are both emmited from the same LED. Running is dimmer and braking is brighter, naturally.
From what I can see on the control board and the wiring to the lghts, it seems that it switches polarity to drive the running lights or the braking lights
DigiKey does not have any LEDs that have stamped and formed leads like the ones in your pictures. From what I’m seeing the LED @David_1528 provided, Part Number R20WHT-5-0080 is the closest option we have.
