Samsung Reliability Info for Ceramic Capacitors

Samsung MLCC Reliability

Short Intro

MTTF (Mean Time to Failure) measures how long a part can function before it fails in the circuit. You may often look for this information in regard to Samsung’s MLCC products. This is a very common request among ceramic capacitors for multiple suppliers.

How to Find this Information

So, how do you know what the actual lifetime is of a ceramic capacitor? Does the manufacturer have this information on hand? Is there a document that shows this?

Some manufacturers will have documentation on hand for each of their MLCCs that show the reliability of the product. However, Samsung typically will point customers to their FAQ page on MTTF info, which shows the following equations:

Snip from Samsung’s FAQ Page: Endurance Test

Each equation can be utilized to calculate the information that is needed. If you would like to review the original post from Samsung’s FAQ page, the source link is in the next category.

This shows how they would calculate it given the accelerated test conditions and failure counts. Without that data these equations won’t help us find the FIT/MTTF. Samsung should just provide the data to customers on their website like TDK.
