I’m interested in ordering one of the Siemens HMI options (model 6AV2123-2DB03-0AX0, DigiKey Part 3473-6AV21232DB030AX0-ND). The data sheet says that it can be configured with WinCC or STEP 7 basic, but it also says that it “contains open-source software, which is provided free of charge see enclosed CD”. I’m new to HMI and PLC programming. Does anyone know if I need to purchase a license for WinCC or STEP 7, or if the product comes with a license? I reached out to DigiKey sales, who directed my question here. Thanks in advance for any help.

It appears that you would need Step 7 software for TIA Portal. If you already had Step 7 for something else, you would not need to purchase again but the free software that is on the description is some type of open based software for other features of the product but not to configure it.
