SVT and SJT Ratings on Power Cords

What is the difference between SVT and SJT ratings on power cords?

SVT cordage is intended for vacuum cleaners while SJT cordage is intended for a broader range of applications requiring “hard service”. SJT requires twice the insulation thickness of SVT cordage. SJT can also be produced in AWG sizes from 10 to 18 while SVT is limited to 17 and 18 AWG only.

As we can see from comparing the two names and referring to the letter meaning above, both SVT cable and SJT cord have cord jackets that are made of a thermoplastic like polyvinylchloride. SVT cord and SJT cable are also insulated with PVC. Additionally, both are rated up to 300 volts and are resistant to oils, acids, ozone, and alkalis.

What’s the difference between SVT cord and SJT cable?

The fundamental difference between SJT cord and SVT cord is the thickness of cable. With thicker insulation, SJT cable has a larger overall diameter than SVT cable. SJT cord is also available in a wider spectrum of gauges, increasing the variety of power needs this cable can meet. Common applications include portable lights, heavy tools and equipment, power extensions, and use in other hard service functions. SVT cable, on the other hand, is more often used in light duty applications, including providing power for vacuum cleaners, food processors, and office equipment.

Overall, it’s important to be able to decipher what the cable names mean on a surface level in order to make sense of its application uses.
