Ten Tips for Reducing DC-DC Converter EMI

When not implemented properly, DC/DC switching power supplies can significantly degrade your wireless product’s performance. EMI from a switching power supply can reduce your radio’s sensitivity resulting in shorter range and dropped packets. Wurth’s Webinar titled " Learn the Ten Tips for Reducing DC-DC Converter EMI for Wireless", covers below tips and techniques for reducing EMI in your wireless design.

Tip 1 - Use low EMI converters
Tip 2 - Use proper PC board stackup
Tip 3 - Ground return plane must be solid
Tip 4 - Keep converter circuitry on same layer
Tip 5 - Keep converter circuitry close to IC
Tip 6 - Keep converter circuitry close to power input
Tip 7 - The output inductor should be shielded
Tip 8 - Orient the output inductor for low EMI
Tip 9 - Use local shield
Tip 10 - Locate antennas and coax away from DC-DC converters
