Key Takeaways

  • Low resistance contacts provide lower heat generation

  • Smaller more powerful PCB mount relays will save footprint space, heat, and assembly costs through more automated assembly & integration as compared to contactors

  • Silver only contacts have a higher tendency to "self-weld” shut, Omron’s >99% Pure Ag contact material and plunger design mitigates this while providing the lowest contact resistance

  • G7LX 1000VDC relay will feature a low contact resistance version released this year very soon

  • Omron’s new production relays are MOS FET and High Current Relays featuring “Omron unique technology” for focus applications such as Energy, Factory and Building Automation, and ATE to name a few

  • G9KA-E is positioned as the highest current and voltage product in the AC High Power PCB Relays moving from 800VAC, 200A to 1000VAC, 300A and feature Heat Suppression and Heat Dissipation structures

  • G9KA-E aims to support Grid-tie Inverters for PV & ESS, UPS and EV Fast Chargers

  • Value proposition includes low heat generation, DC disconnection, and remote monitoring

  • Omron supports carbon neutrality while minimizing installation cost, improving reliability and safety while maximizing power generation and efficiency

  • Omron offers an ecosystem of products more than only relays

  • Omron enjoys working with customers directly with their design requirement needs in order to provide a well-rounded and complete solution

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Omron plan to include low contact resistance for new energy relay launches?

  • Yes, especially for high power relays we want to limit the heat as much as possible, we will have lower contact resistance available. For example, the existing G7L-X 1000VDC relay we will be releasing this year very soon a low contact resistance version of this product.

Will Omron help the transition from other switching types to these relays?

  • Yes, we like to work with our customers directly with their transitions and we have advice we can provide based on our test setups and what we see works.

Are these relays stocked at DigiKey?

  • Yes.

Does your branch of Omron only sell relay products?

  • No, we have sensors, switches, and connectors among other products.

Do you have a plan for a relay with higher amperage?

  • Based on the AC side and the trend maps, we already have targeted the biggest sectors already so at this time there is no plan to increase the AC market side currently unless we see a market need. However, for the DC side we will be increasing the capacity.

Can this relay handle current inrush?

  • It is not developed to handle any inrush current, as it is designed to be only a disconnect. It is recommended that you either develop some sort of inrush circuit protection or use a pre-charge circuit.

Is onboard charging of electric vehicles a target for your product?

  • For the G9KA-E no, and the reason why is it is a PCB relay and in order for it to operate to electrical spec we need to make sure it doesn’t experience too much vibration. However, on the DC side we have the G9E relays which are automotive developed for automotive applications which have better vibration and shock specs.

Can you speak to the durability section to this new relay datasheet?

  • In terms of electrical operations, we have the general 30,000 operations for lower make and break for full 300A carry. The emergency or fault switching is lower at only 10 operations for those rare occasions as we don’t expect you will be breaking that full load every time you operate. We do provide test data and can input your exact parameters in order to perform testing if you need more specific durability or other test rating.

Does Omron only support energy applications for these high-power relays?

  • No, energy is the target application, but the relays ultimate target is to downsize technology and there are plenty of applications outside of energy applications that can use these for high power loads, and we’d love to talk with you if you have questions regarding these in a different application.
