Z-Wave Development Kits (500 series)

Silicon Labs provides two different Z-Wave development kits, a Z-Wave Controller Kit and a Z-Wave Embedded Kit. Depending on the Z-wave product being developed customers will need one or both of the kits. Both kits support all worldwide Z-wave frequencies.

Z-Wave Controller Kit is part# RBK-ZW500DEV-CON2 (this kit provides access to Z-Wave® to Z/IP Gateway SDKs including Z-Wave for CE SDK and Z-Ware for Portal SDK ) . The Z-Wave for CE SDK contains all the software building blocks needed to design a Smart Home solution. It shields the developer from the complexity of the Z-Wave protocol, and represents all the devices in the Z-Wave Network as software objects that the developer can easily manipulate. The Z/IP Gateway is included with a host-build environment in Ubuntu Linux, creating targets for the TI BeagleBone Black. The Z/IP Gateway connects to a UZB controller reference design as in default mode, however, all of the 500 series modules and SoCs can be used with the Z-Wave for CE SDK, and SerialAPI binaries are included in the kit. The included Z-Ware C library is offered with an easy-to-understand C API for that allows developers to easily design and/or customize applications. The Z-Ware for Portal SDK contains an evaluation server running on Ubuntu Linux, which combines Z-Ware and Z-Ware Apps with standard technology, such as OpenLDAP and Apache Server, to form a starting point for portal solution developers. The Z-Ware Portal is designed to serve a Z/IP Gateway, such as the Z/IP Gateway from the Z-Wave for CE SDK. All the components of the server are offered as source code, with a build environment for Ubuntu Linux. Access to the controller SDK is available on Silicon Labs website at Technical Support - Silicon Labs .

  • INCLUDED HARDWARE FOR THE CE SDK
    • 3x UZB USB Stick Bridge Controller
    • 1x E HW – contains EU protocol
    • 1x U HW – contains US protocol
    • 1x H HW – contains JP protocol
    • 1x TI BeagleBone™ Black

  • INCLUDED HARDWARE FOR RF TESTING AND DE-BUGGING
    • 3x ZDB5101 E/U/H dev board
    • 1x UZB-S – USB Stick Network-Sniffer (note: this is only included in development kit and not sold individually)

Z-Wave Embedded Kit is part# RBK-ZW500DEV-EMB2 (this kit includes the Z-Wave Base Kit, three Z-Wave regional kits, access to the Z-Wave Protocol SDK and embedded and serial API SDK downloads). To develop custom firmware with the Z-Wave Protocol SDK you will also need version 9.54A of the Keil PK51 compiler (not included in the Z-Wave Embedded Kit). There are several Keil PK51 licensing variations (node locked, dongle upgrade, floating), see link https://www.digikey.com/short/3d05nm37 . The Z-Wave Base Kit includes the development platform boards, power supply units, cables, and accessories. There are three frequency variant Z-Wave Regional Kits which consist of Z-Wave reference design modules that are RF-matched for specific regions and module samples that allow for easy prototype development. The Z-Wave Protocol Developer’s Kit (SDK) software consists of Z-Wave libraries that support controller and slave devices, as well as sample code for a broad range of home automation applications. Access to the embedded SDKs is available on Silicon Labs website at Technical Support - Silicon Labs .
