The switch would be disassociated
from the tip or ring. Ideally it would
close to ground or a separate pin..

Available listings of 3.5mm audio jacks with internal switches can be found here. Information on the specific configuration of said switches has to be taken from the datasheets, but those with more switches are more likely to place on in isolation from tip or ring.
