AC DC Converters, Offline Switchers

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the AC DC Converters, Offline Switches category on DigiKey.com

AC DC Converters, Offline Switches are component-level control devices used to construct equipment that converts AC utility power to a DC form, typically at a much-reduced voltage. Devices that incorporate the primary switching element for the system and those which do not are both included. Due to the high ratio of input to output voltages and the need for isolation commonly encountered in such systems, they are often used in conjunction with an external transformer. While the use of custom transformers for this purpose is common practice, a variety of stock products intended for such use are available, under the heading of Switching Converter, SMPS Transformers.

SelectionCharacteristics

Specifications to determine which AC DC Converter, Offline Switcher is right for your application.

Output Isolation: Indicates whether the expected application topology for the IC provides galvanic isolation between input and output.

Internal Switch(s): Indicates whether or not a device integrates the power transistor(s) needed for manipulation of the power source a device is intended to control.

Voltage – Breakdown: Indicates the rated breakdown voltage of a power-switching transistor integrated into a control IC. Not applicable to devices designed for use with an external power switch.

Topology: Indicates the conversion topology/topologies that are implemented by the focus IC of the chip.

Voltage – Startup: The typical device supply voltage that must be applied to allow disengagement of an under-voltage lock-out feature and initiate normal operation.

Voltage – Supply (Vcc/Vdd): Voltage Common Collector, Voltage Drain Drain; Characterizes the allowable voltage range for the supply input which powers the internal functions of the device, as distinguished from the allowed range for the supply being controlled or transformed by the device. This may reflect both for devices that derive operational power internally from a source being controlled.

Duty Cycle: Indicates the maximum portion of an operating cycle over which a device will maintain its output in an active state.

Frequency – Switching: Describes a device’s nominal operating frequency or frequency range; the rate at which an input power source is switched in the course of the conversion process.

Power (Watts): The maximum continuous output power a device is designed to produce.

Fault Protection: Enumerates protection features incorporated by a device and/or operational hazards against which a device is protected in some manner.

Control Features: Enumerates pin-accessible control and diagnostic functions available on a device.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Package / Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the suppliers device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Supplier Device Package: This is what the manufacturer calls the package of this device. They are manufacturer specific. It is typically best to use the actual dimensions from the datasheets rather than use this terminology when designing your circuit.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.
