DC DC Switching Controllers

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the DC DC Switching Controllers category on DigiKey.com

PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) DC to DC switching controllers are voltage regulation ICs used in high efficiency circuits configured to generate output supply voltages above (boost or step-up) or below (buck or step-down) the input supply. Other topologies may include; buck-boost, flyback, forward, cuk, SEPIC, full bridge, half bridge, and push-pull. They differ from linear regulators that require minimum voltages and “burn off” excess voltage.

SelectionCharacteristics

Output Type: Indicates the type of electrical signal the device provides, such as PWM or transistor driver.

Function: Indicates which switching operation(s) the device is designed to control.

Output Configuration: Indicates which broad type or polarity of output is available from the device.

Topology: Indicates the basic circuit configuration of the device, determining core aspects of its functionality and behavior.

Number of Outputs: Indicates how many outputs this device provides.

Output Phases: The maximum number of power conversion circuits that can be controlled by the device.

Voltage - Supply (Vcc/Vdd): Characterizes the allowable voltage range for the supply input which powers the internal functions of the device, as distinguished from the allowed range for the supply being controlled or transformed by the device. May reflect both for devices that derive operational power internally from a source being controlled.

Frequency - Switching: Describes a device’s nominal operating frequency or frequency range; the rate at which an input power source is switched in the course of the conversion process.

Duty Cycle (Max): The maximum portion of a switching cycle for which the device will maintain a primary external switch in an “on” state.

Synchronous Rectifier: Indicates whether or not a device incorporates a rectification transistor to reduce conduction losses.

Clock Sync: Indicates whether or not a means of synchronizing device operation to an external timing source is provided.

Serial Interfaces: Indicates standard serial communication interfaces/protocols that are present or provisioned for on a device.

Control Features: Enumerates pin-accessible control and diagnostic functions available on a device.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Package / Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the supplier device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Supplier Device Package: This is what the manufacturer calls the package of this device. They are manufacturer specific. It is typically best to use the actual dimensions from the datasheets rather than to go by this terminology when designing your circuit.
