AdamTech BNC connector; why 4 pcs?

I’m trying to determine what the whiteish “tube” piece is. I can’t tell if it’s metallic or plastic or what. According to the datasheet, its inner diameter is 0.067" (1.70mm). This connector is for RG-174 which has a typical outer diameter of about 0.110" (2.79mm) so it doesn’t appear that the coax cable will pass through it. It may, however, be able to fit over the dielectric but I don’t know why we’d want to do this.

This kit also seems to be one of the few that has this extra piece. Can someone tell me what this is and how it’s used?

Thanks!

Interesting question, @techrah,

It’s been some time since I have assembled this type of connector, However, I believe the pin will click into its final place.

The white (teflon?) material placed over the cable’s dielectric may provide additional pressure preventing the pin from being unseated. It may also provide centering of the cable while the shield is placed over the knurled body.

Sincerely,

Aaron

I didn’t find any info from Adam Tech, but I did find a reference to it on the documentation for a similar part from another vendor. They refer to it as a “filler sleeve” and state that it is intended to slide under the braid during assembly, just behind the contact.

The data sheet shows that it’s a “sleeve” and that it’s made from POM (Polyoxymethylene) which is a type of plastic. Dialectric insulator is also marked as being made from the same material on that data sheet.
