Changing LED’s on strobe light

Hello everyone,

I’m starting a project and would appreciate your insights and expertise. I currently have a set of vehicle strobe lights that are an unknown color, and I want to change the LED color to amber.

I have some experience repairing circuit board traces. However, my understanding of LED specs and replacement is lacking.

If anyone has experience with LED changes or knows what type or brand of LEDs these are, the insight is appreciated. Here are a few questions I have:

How can I identify the specific type/brand of LED?

Any tips on techniques or precautions to take while replacing the LEDs?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!

Hello Epd1989 and welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.

For identifying the LED, if you have a schematic available, that may assist in identifying the LED.
Otherwise, a good place to start may be measuring the components themselves to determine package size. If the devices are operational, using a multimeter to measure the forward voltage drop as LEDs generally have a different drop based on color, and to know what voltage range you would be looking for. You will also want to use a multimeter in diode mode to determine the polarity of the components.
I also found this SMD component replacement guide, that could be helpful in your work.
There is also the below inforgraphic that shows how forward voltage drop can change based on LED color.

It would be difficult the find a schematic for this so unfortunately I think taking those measurements are my only option. They measure 2mm x 2mm. The lights do function and I will take those measurements with a meter. Will that help in identifying what type/brand of led’s they are?
