This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the COBs, Engines, Modules, Strips category on DigiKey.com
LED lighting in large scale often requires a COB (chip on board), Engine, Module, or Strip. COB lighting combines numerous LED die onto one substrate, taking up much less space than a traditional array of SMD LEDs. LED engines combine SMD LED’s with resistors to create a ready to use light. LED modules use tiny LED’s similar to a COB but they are still easily individually visible unlike with COB’s. These are available in different color options, CCT values, lumens, current, and voltage options. They also come in an array of configurations such as strips, flexible strips, rectangles, discs, and starboards.
SelectionCharacteristics
Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.
Color: Indicates the color(s) of the indicator LED(s).
CCT (K): Characterizes the perceived color of a nominally “white” light source, in terms of comparison to an ideal blackbody radiator. Devices with lower values appear more yellow, those with higher values appear bluer.
Wavelength: Typically this indicates the nominal wavelength one would expect during normal operation.
Configuration: Describes the orientation of the LED(s).
Luminous Flux @ Current/Temperature: Indicates the measurement of light energy emitted by a device operated at the listed test current and test temperature, which accounts for the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths or colors.
Current - Test: Indicates the amount of current flow through a device used by a manufacturer as a test condition for characterization of one or more other device parameters.
Temperature - Test: Indicates the device temperature at which other listed device parameters are measured.
Voltage - Forward (Vf) (Typ): Characterizes the voltage drop across a forward-biased diode, measured at the test current indicated.
Lumens/Watt @ Current - Test: Characterizes a device’s luminous efficacy (light output per unit of electrical input power, compensated for typical human color sensitivity) measured at the indicated test current and a specified device test temperature.
Current - Max: This represents the maximum current to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this current may damage the device and/or other system components.
CRI (Color Rendering Index): Characterizes the influence of a light source on the perceived color of illuminated objects, relative to that produced by a standardized illuminant of the same correlated color temperature (CCT). Values closer to 100 indicate color rendition that more closely matches the standard.
Viewing Angle: Indicates the angle of light emitted from the LED(s).
Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as dimming or IP rating.
IP Ratings
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings such as (IP20, IP65, IP67, etc.) define how likely water and dirt will get into the system. The first number represents dirt and solid contaminants while the second represents water and liquids.

4 | Protected against solids larger than 1mm. | Protected against water splashed from any direction. Limited ingress permitted. |
5 | Protected against dust. Limited ingress of dust permitted. | Will not affect operation of equipment 2-8 hours. Protected against jets of water. Limited ingress permitted. |
6 | Dust tight. No ingress of dust 2-8 hours. | Protected against powerful jets of water. Limited ingress permitted. |
7 | ______________________ | Protected against the effects of immersion in 15cm-1m for 30 minutes. |
8 | ______________________ | Continuous immersion in water up to 3m for long periods of time. |
9 | ______________________ | Protected against high pressure jets of hot water. (30 seconds) |
9K | ______________________ | Protected against high pressure jets of hot water. (2 minutes) |
Size / Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device. Typically length X width, or diameter.
Height: Indicates how far the device will extend above the surface to which it has been attached.
Light Emitting Surface (LES): Indicates the dimensions of a device’s optical emission surface.
Lens Type: Characterizes the shape of a device’s optical emitting surface.
