This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the D-Sub, D-Shaped Connector Backshells, Hoods category on DigiKey.com
Products in this family are used for the construction or repair of D-subminiature (D-Sub) cables, so named because of the D-shaped shroud surrounding their mating region and the relatively high interconnect density they offered at the time of their introduction. These products serve to enclose the junction between the conductors in a cable and the contacts in the connector assembly, providing cable strain relief and facilities for mechanical fixation.
SelectionCharacteristics
Accessory Type: The type, style, or nature of the accessory.
Number of Positions: Indicates the number of contacts contained within the connector that the part is designed for use with. Typically the connector itself is not included with purchase of the part.
Cable Type: Indicates the type of cable for which the part is designed to be compatible with.
Cable Exit: Describes the orientation(s) with which a cable can exit the connector body, relative to the connector contacts.
Shielding: Whether or not the device possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference.
Primary Material: Indicates the general material composition of the device.
Material: Indicates the specific material composition of the device.
Plating: Indicates the finish/plating material applied to the device.
Hardware: Enumerates the hardware items that are included with a backshell/hood.
Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as mating screws, a latch lock, or IP ratings.
IP Ratings
IP (Ingress Protection) ratings such as (IP20, IP65, IP67, etc.) define how likely water and dirt will get into the system. The first number represents dirt and solid contaminants while the second represents water and liquids.
