Backshells and Cable Clamps

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Backshells and Cable Clamps category on DigiKey.com

Circular connectors are interconnect products characterized by a cross section that is generally circular in shape and have contacts that are typically arranged on a polar coordinate system, rather than on a rectangular grid or coaxially. For products marketed as modular connector systems allowing configuration of a desired connector from a catalog of interoperable components, backshell and cable clamp components are respectively used to cover the non-mating end of the connector and to provide strain relief for attached cabling.

SelectionCharacteristics

Type: The type, style, or nature of the device.

Cable Opening: Indicates the diameter of the aperture in a device for cable exit, or the range of cable diameters that can be accommodated.

Diameter - Outside: Nominal outside diameter of the backshell.

Shell Size - Insert: Describes the size of a connector or component thereof in terms of the size of the contact-bearing insert with which a product is compatible. Insert size designations are derived from various industry and military standards.

Thread Size: A description of the threaded diameter and thread-per-inch/pitch the backshell is designed to mate to.

Cable Exit: Describes the orientation(s) with which a cable can exit the connector body, relative to the connector contacts.

Primary Material: Indicates the general material composition of the device.

Material: Indicates the specific material composition of the device.

Plating: Indicates the finish/plating material applied to the device.

Shielding: Whether or not the device possesses an electrically insulating barrier that helps to reduce or eliminate electromagnetic interference.

Color: The dominant color of the device.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as a cable gland, clamp screws, or a grommet.

Ingress Protection: IP (Ingress Protection) ratings such as (IP20, IP65, IP67, etc.) define how likely water and dirt will get into the system. The first number represents dirt and solid contaminants while the second represents water and liquids.

IP Ratings
