Decode AlphaWire Color & Put-up codes in Part Numbers

AlphaWire has part numbers that contain color and put-up codes that can sometimes be presented in different ways. Understanding how these part numbers can be changed is very useful. Sometimes validating part numbers can be difficult if one party presents one part number while another is using a different one. The documents linked here will help to show the equivalencies. In addition to that, simply understanding how these go together can help when finding parts with different ,but valid, attributes that will work in an application.

Alphawire part numbers are made up of three parts. These parts are not necessarily presented in the same way, but are equally as valid.

They give this example of three part numbers that are for the same thing yet are equal part numbers.
[Item Number] [Color] [length/Put-Up Code]

3080 Black 1000 Ft.
3080-2 1000 Ft.
3080 BK001

Item Number

This is the series of the wire and staying within this series usually means the most important attributes are going to be the same. The variations that are available will be selected by the next two portions of the number.

Color

Not all series will have all colors available. This could be because Digikey does not stock that color but it could also be because the supplier does not offer that color within that series. These documents will help to select valid color choices for the type of cable needed, again, just because the color code is valid, does not mean that the supplier makes it in that option. If the color you are searching for is not found the data supplier product page or data sheet should be referenced.

Put-up Code

A put code can reference the type of packaging as well as the length of the wire being referenced.

Here are some example numbers in various package types.

021 Box 1000 Ft. 1000 Ft.

More input about the color code -

“NC”, such as 5610B1201 NC001, “NC" is no color - we assume it is whatever the base color of the compound is.
“CL”, such as 470027CY CL321, it call out clear compound.
