Ferrite Beads and Chips

Ferrite cores are devices that are designed to prevent high frequency noise or EMI (electromagnetic interference). These ferrite cores are made to be placed within an electric circuit. Key characteristics are the filter type (differential, signal, or power), number of lines, max current rating, impedance and a specified frequency, and mounting type (free hanging, surface mount, or through-hole).


SelectionCharacteristics

Filter Type: Identifies the type of line the device is designed for use with.

Number of Lines: Indicates the number of galvanically isolated current paths that pass through a device.

Impedance @ Frequency: Characterizes the total magnitude of opposition to AC current flow through a device, and the test frequency at which the characterization is made.

Current Rating (Max): Typically this represents the maximum current to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this current may damage the device and/or other system components.

DC Resistance (DCR) (Max): Characterizes the maximum resistance of a current path through a device.

Ratings: Minimum performance standards of the device, which are typically set by a third party.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Package/Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the supplier’s device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Height (Max): Indicates how far the device will extend above the surface to which it has been attached.

Size/Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device. Typically length X width or diameter X length.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as automotive.
