A common question we see here at DigiKey is requests for a simple, generic crimp tool for Quick Connect Terminals (sometimes also called spade or slip-on terminals). As this terminal type is invariably used for power connections in relatively low-power environments, a ‘good enough’ crimp will usually serve.
Tech Tip : Don’t underestimate the importance of the connection. A proper crimp is required for mechanical strength as well as to prevent future oxidation of the crimp. A poor-quality (low resistance) crimp can lead to overheating, burned insulation with potential to short out adjacent wires, and even fire.
To that end, the WM9990-ND from Molex is a simple, no-nonsense crimp tool covering common wire gauges ranging from 10AWG to 22AWG. While the tool is intended for use with Molex’s own lines of QC terminals, these products are generally all very similar to each other and largely standardized. If you do not need to pass certifications but are still looking for a made-for-task tool for QC terminals rather than relying on a hardware store pliers crimper, this is a good option for the budget conscious.
