Harman Kardon Power Capacitor Replacement Options

Hello, Working on an HK Integrated Amp. Looking for in stock options for replacing the original 8000uf, +/-20, 45v, 30mm x 50mm power capacitors. Thank you.

Hello @BB-8,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.

Please follow the steps outlined in this video emphasis on lead spacing.

I made this video a few years ago before joining the DigiKey team.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Happy soldering,

Aaron

Hi Aaron, I appreciate the video. I don’t have vernier calipers, but the spacing looks to be 10mm between leads. My hope was to hear from someone who has done a similar swap and hear what caps from DigiKey they would recommend. Nichicon, Rubycon, Ilinois, Chemi-Con, Elna, etc… Something between 8200uf to 10000uf and 45v to 65v. Please let me know if there is a different forum you would recommend. Thank you.

Seems like it’s pretty slim pickings for audio-specific capacitors in that range. The best options I found were:
493-17537-ND for an 8200uF
and
4785PHBK-ND for a 10000uF

Hello @BB-8,

In my opinion, nearly any quality capacitor could be used in this position. The parts recommended by @chris_groom would be near ideal (verify mechanical fit) as they were designed for audio.

Technically, most amplifiers have significant amounts of global negative feedback to improve the amplifiers linearity. This feedback also tends to reduce power supply imperfections. Consequently, the quality of the bulk filter capacitor is less critical than we are led to believe.

Sincerely,

Aaron

Hi Aaron, Appreciate the feedback. That is what I thought about caps in the power supply. I wanted to confirm as it opens up more options. I don’t believe the 4785PHBK-ND for a 10000uF Chris found would work as it is only rated at 40v and the current caps are 45v. Thank you, BB
