I’m trying to identify a replacement resistor. They are externally exposed wire wound 5 ohm, cap to cap measures approximately 13mm, wound cylinder is approximately 3mm and end of tail to end of tail approximately 100mm. Hope you can help
Welcome to the forum.
Except for the condition, that does not look like a wirewound resistor manufactured this century. I suspect there is something very special about this part like a very high temperature rating, but what that is I don’t know.
Here’s a search result that gives 5 ohm wirewound resistors that are about the same size.

Thanks Paul, they are used in the smoke units of model trains. A fibreglass wick goes over the wire windings. Smoke oil drawn up the wick is burnt by the coil. Someone must make them just need to find who.

Aha!
That’s not a resistor, it’s a miniature nichrome heating element.
All the ones I could find in a quick search on the internet appear to be 27 ohm units for Lionel, like this example.
In any case, general electronics/electrical parts suppliers won’t have this specialty part.
