JRC 2904

Good day,
My unit uses a JRC 2904 op amp in the power supply section. I just wanted to ask if there is an alternative for this part. A really much better, high quality alternative. Thank you for your help.

Hello saravananshanmugam27,

Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum.
I’m not familiar with this Opamp, or what would be a direct alternate, but a higher quality.
Maybe one of the Engineers are more familiar with this item, and can add their recommendations.

Thank you for your response. Would I need to re post this in another section?

Hello @saravananshanmugam27,

The JRC 2904 appears to cross to a NJM-2904.

I’m of two minds with regards to substitution. On the one hand, I will tell you that the OEM has worked very hard to optimize the equipment for cost, stability, and good sound quality. On the other hand, you will learn so much from experimentation.

As a starting point, may I recommend this book by Douglas Self to learn about low power circuits.

Happy soldering,

Thank you for the book, Dahlen. A very useful guide for me. I understand what you mean. However, this op amp has high noise. Not a bad chip but it’s average. That’s why I want to replace it with something that is much more better.

Still looking for an alternative op amp. If anyone has any suggestions, please kindly share it. Thank you

In order to at least get you started, I did find a few alternate part numbers that may work for you-
2129-NJM8512BE-TE1CT-ND

2129-NJM062CG-TE2CT-ND

2129-NJM072CG-TE2CT-ND

Now, each of these represents some improvements in one way or another, but I can’t really definitively say which, if any, will improve your noise situation. Maybe someone else can suggest a definitive way to select based on just the op amp, but there are a lot of variables at play so all I can really recommend is to continue doing research on this.

Thank you Chris. That helped a lot and got me going for a few hours now. NJM8512 looks to be a good replacement. I also found AD8620 but it doesn’t come in a 8sop package. Still, it would be really good if someone could suggest an op amp with low noise and good parameters. One more question I have is, for the supply capacitors, do they have to be low ESR capacitors or just normal ones will do?
