LED for Visual Target Identification

Looking for an LED (preferably green) that can show a small spot of light on a target approximately 21 inches away. The spot size is not that important and can vary from ½ to 3 inches in diameter. The spot needs to be visible in the daylight, but not direct sunlight. Our currently electrical system uses M12 four and five pin connectors, so that type of connection would be preferable. We have tried lasers, but they have a beam that is too narrow and can be hidden by irregularities in the target.

I’m checking to see if anyone here has a suggestion on this.

Greetings,

To get a 3" spot at 21" distance implies a viewing angle of about 8° or less. Few LEDs will produce a beam that tight without use of some secondary optics such as these. Different lens/LED pairings will yield different results, so there’s a bit of a conundrum in terms of selection–one might try looking for a narrow-angle lens and then look up LEDs for which the given info applies. Something like a OPT0003002F and XPEBGR-L1-0000-00F01might be a reasonable combination, for example.

One may also note that plain laser diodes PLT5 520EB_P commonly have more bean divergence than many other modules, and might be useful.

These are of course all component-level solutions that would require some assembly–if you’re looking for a pre-assembled/packaged solution, I’m not sure we’d have anything that would quite fit the bill.

We do carry one relatively finished product which could possibly be used for your application. It is a laser module with an adjustable beam angle from between 0.4 milliradians to about 12 degrees. That should allow for a spot of an appropriate size.

VLM-520-96 LPA Adjustable focus and power green laser module

It is relatively large, at about 73mm long by 16.5mm diameter, and is not inexpensive, but, depending on your specific application, it might be worth considering.
