Looking for small form factor audio codec to interface at least 4 mics for beamforming

Hello ,

I am looking for small form factor (TWS) audio codec to interface 4 mems mic at least . Audio codec should be interfaceable with the host processor over I2S or ADF. Can you suggest the p/n or a possible combination of codec+mic?

What i can see is below possibility :

  1. 4 PDM mics —SAI---->codec—Single I2S—>Host processor
  2. 4 TDM mics —SAI---->codec—Single I2S—>Host processor
  3. 4 I2S mics —I2S—codec–Single I2S—>Host porcessor
  4. 4 I2S mics – 4 I2S to PDM conversion IC —>(4 I2S??)Host Processor
  5. 4 PDM mics – 4 PDM to I2S conversion IC —>(4 PDMs??)Host Processor

I am limited by the I2S ,ADF on Host processor as well ( 1 each ).

Goal is to get the 46-96Khz audio data on host processor.

Please advise what combination and which p/n will suit best for me.

Feel free to let me know for any questions.

Regards,

S

Greetings,

I’m unfamiliar with “ADF” as a interface/signalling protocol analogous to I2S; further information about that and the resources available on the host processor may be helpful.

I2S as such is typically understood as a 2-channel interface, so handling 4+ channels with only one proper I2S port would be difficult. While the similar TDM interface supports >2 channels and many devices accommodate both protocols, it is not always so.

The ADAU7118 may be of interest, as a device designed to interface up to 8 PDM mic inputs to an I2S/TDM output.

Understanding “TWS” to refer to a wireless earbud sort of application however, the package for that device might be thought overly large. The extreme space constraints of such an application along with their high-volume nature suggests the use of an ASIC if existing application profiles have not already resulted in devices of a suitable size with the desired feature set.
