Mean-Well SPD-20-240P wiring for 240 VAC

The diagram on the data sheet shows three wire. I need clarification of how to connect to a 240 VAC Electrical panel.

Thank you in advance to your response.

Hello and welcome the Tech Forum.

I have a real good diagram for a split phase for 2 Hot and 1 Neutral wire below.

Hopefully this can get you wired up.

Thank you

Ryan

I see no indications that the device in question is intended for use in protecting a split phase panel, and several that it is intended only for use on single-phase branch circuits with suitable overcurrent protections. Attempting to use it for whole-panel protection would likely introduce significant hazards far greater than those it would mitigate.

While whole-panel surge protection systems do exist, their selection and installation is best done in consultation with a qualified electrician.

Hi Ryan,
The device comes with tree wires, how to connect to a electrical panel.

That’s what I thought. The only way it could work, is if we use two of them one for each of the 120 lines and then ground to earth ground.

Connectivity is not really the issue here. The concern is what happens when (not if) the surge protection devices wear out and fail short. The internal protections of a device designed for branch circuit use will be inadequate to interrupt the fault current that would result from a direct panel connection, and the resulting arc may well have a high enough impedance that the main wouldn’t trip.

A foreseeable result of such a situation would be the device and it’s connecting wiring turning orange and spewing flame for a sufficient period of time to ignite the building, and one’s insurance company denying the resulting claim because the loss was caused by an unqualified electrical installation.

Again, whole-panel surge suppression systems do exist, but should be chosen and installed in consultation with a qualified electrician.
