Monolithic Crystals

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Monolithic Crystals category on DigiKey.com

Monolithic crystal filter (MCF) products are used in radio and related applications as bandpass filters. Closely related to the quartz crystal resonators used widely for frequency generation, MCF filters employ the piezoelectric and mechanical resonance properties of the quartz material to produce a filter with very high selectivity in a compact package.

SelectionCharacteristics

Frequency - Center: Indicates the midpoint of a filter’s pass-band; the range of frequencies that is minimally attenuated by the filter.

Impedance: Identifies the effective resistance of the device to alternating current. It is comprised of resistance and reactance. It is measured in Ohm’s and uses the metric system for values.

Insertion Loss: A measure of power losses incurred by signals passing through a device, under manufacturer-defined test conditions.

Bandwidth: Refers to the span of frequencies covered by the band. For example, a device with a frequency of 10MHz and a bandwidth of 2MHz, typically signifies the band of frequencies between 9MHz and 11MHz. Carefully consult the datasheets to ensure the device you choose covers the correct band of frequencies for your application.

Ripple: Characterizes the amount by which a filter’s transfer function varies within its pass band.

Number of Poles: Typically this indicates the speed of the rolloff rate and is almost interchangeable with filter order. The higher the number of poles, the faster the rolloff rate will be.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Package/Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the supplier’s device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Size/Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device. Typically length X width.

Height (Max): Indicates how far the device will extend above the surface to which it has been attached.
