Motion Sensors - Optical Motion Sensors

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Motion Sensors - Optical Motion Sensors category on DigiKey.com

Products in the Optical Motion Sensors family use light (usually infrared) to detect object movement. Passive infrared types detect changes in the amount of infrared light falling on the sensor, such as caused by a warm body passing through their field of view, whereas area reflective types emit light and detect changes in the amount that is reflected by nearby objects. Products such as light curtains for machine safety which detect object presence rather motion are not included.

SelectionCharacteristics

Specifications to determine which optical motion sensor is right for your application.

Sensor Type: The type of sensor technology used in the motion detector.

Sensing Distance: The maximum distance at which the sensor can detect movement.

Output Type: Indicates the type of electrical signal the device provides, such as analog or digital.

Voltage - Supply: Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.

Trigger Type: Designates whether it has an internal or external trigger.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as a long-distance lens or sleep mode.

Package / Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the suppliers device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
