Motors - AC, DC

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Motors - AC, DC category on DigiKey.com

Products in the AC and DC motor family are electromechanical transducers used to convert an electrical input to mechanical motion or vibration, typically of a rotational nature. Both brushed and brushless DC motors are included, along with stepper motors, linear actuators, industrial and hobby type servo motors, and vibration generating motors for haptic applications.

SelectionCharacteristics

Type: The specific classification of the motor based on its operating design.

Function: The specific role or purpose of the motor within a given application or system.

Motor Type: The specific classification of the motor based on its operational characteristics.

Voltage - Rated: Typically this represents the maximum voltage rating to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this voltage rating may damage the device and other system components.

RPM: Characterizes the nominal speed at which a device rotates when rated voltage is applied. Actual speed will vary with application conditions.

Torque - Rated (oz-in / mNm): The mechanical torque a motor can deliver continuously without damage, under manufacturer-specified environmental conditions.

Power - Rated: The maximum mechanical output power a device can produce on a continuous basis, under manufacturer-defined test conditions.

Encoder Type: Indicates presence or absence of a rotary encoder on a motor, and where present, whether the encoder provides absolute or relative shaft position measurements.

Size / Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device in length and width or diameter.

Diameter - Shaft: Indicates physical measurement of the shaft’s diameter.

Length - Shaft and Bearing: Describes the distance that a motor shaft and any supporting bearing structure protrude from the main body/mounting face of a motor.

Mounting Hole Spacing: Indicates the diameter of a circle passing through the centers of a motor’s mounting holes.

Termination Style: Selection of termination style used to connect the device to a system, such as alligator clips, J lead, and solder tab.

Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as brake, encoder kit, and noise filter.

Gear Reduction Ratio: For devices incorporating a mechanical gear reduction, the ratio of input shaft speed to output shaft speed.

Torque - Max Momentary (oz-in / mNm): Maximum mechanical torque deliverable by a motor for short time periods, subject to limitation by thermal management concerns.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.
