Solenoids

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Solenoids category on DigiKey.com

Solenoids and Actuators are electromechanical devices that contain a cylindrical metal core that moves in and out of the device based upon the direction of the electrical current flowing through the part’s coil windings. Specification options range from voltage rating, stroke length, force direction, overall size, and the technology driving the mechanical motion, from basic electromechanical action to shape memory alloys

SelectionCharacteristics

Technology: Indicates the underlying operational principle used in the device.

Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.

Duty Cycle: Indicates whether a device’s design allows operation on a continuous or interrupted basis, with “pulse” implying a shorter specified operating period than “intermittent.”

Voltage - Rated: Typically this represents the maximum voltage rating to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this voltage rating may damage the device and other system components.

Stroke Length: The maximum rated travel distance of the solenoid plunger.

Power (Watts): Typically this rating indicates the nominal amount of power you would expect the device to consume during normal operation.

DC Resistance (DCR): The electrical resistance exhibited by the solenoid coil when a DC current is applied to it.

Bushing Thread: Indicates the thread specification of a device’s threaded mounting bushing, for products equipped therewith.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Termination Style: Selection of termination style used to connect the device to a system, such as pin header, quick connect, and wire leads.

Size / Dimension: The physical dimensions of the device in length, height, and width or diameter.

Diameter - Shaft: The physical measurement of the shaft’s diameter.

Shaft Detail: Describes the geometry of the end of the solenoid shaft that typically connects to other components in a mechanical assembly.
