This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Power Distribution, Surge Protectors category on DigiKey.com
Surge Protectors provide protection for devices from a voltage spike or power surges. The types of protection are Outlet Boxes, Outlet Strip, Power Distribution Unit (PDU), Surge Protector, Surge Protection Module, and Surge Protector for Media Lines Only. The current ranges from 150 mA to 310 A with voltages ranging from 5 V to 1.5 kV and the Energy ranging from 50 J to 6480 J.
SelectionCharacteristics
Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.
Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.
Current - Max: Typically this represents the maximum current to which a device will meet its given specifications. Exceeding this current may damage the device and/or other system components.
Region Utilized: Indicates the region(s) of the globe to which a product is adapted for use by virtue of the connector style incorporated and/or voltage levels accommodated.
Overload Protection: Indicates if a device incorporates an overcurrent protection mechanism, and the type thereof.
Connector - AC Input: Indicates the style of connector(s) on a device through which power to be distributed is supplied.
AC Outlets: Indicates the number of standard AC output ports present on a device.
Connector - AC Output: Specifies the connectors used by a device for AC output, in terms of standard designations or description when non-standard connectors are used.
Voltage - Input: Typically represented by a range, this indicates the low and high voltage limits which one can expect standard operation. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.
Housing Material: Indicates the material composition of the housing of the device.
Media Lines Protected: Enumerates connector styles for common media interfaces that can be protected by a device.
Energy: The maximum amount of energy a device is rated to absorb during a single, non-repetitive protection event. Values refer to measurements made using a standardized test waveform.
Cord Length: Indicates the total length of the cord if supplied.
Approval Agency: An indication that the product meets the minimum safety standards of an approving agency. These agencies are either government entities or private third-party labs that protect consumer safety.
Features: These are different capabilities or properties of the device such as GFCI protected or USB charge port(s).
