why is the price so high for this chip? How can it be actually purchased?

Many enterprise businesses establish accounts with DigiKey. You can contact the primary 800-344-4539 number and request a DigiKey point of contact to establish a corporate account.

Yes, Altera’s state-of-the-art flagship FPGA has a high price. A single FPGA is about 1/5 of a year’s salary for an entry-level engineer.

The education kit is the typical entry point. This related Terasic P0647 (same family, not the same FPGA) is an example. Note that there are additional costs includes Quartus software (not included in the kit). You may also need a small but dedicated team of EE, CE, or CS to leverage the computational and signal processing power of this device.

Despite this cost, this may be the only way to meet objective.

One of my old instructors lead a team developing technology for cell towers. They didn’t blink an eye when it came to cost. Ironically, the FPGA was used as a development tool before spinning an ASIC. It was the cost of the ASIC that made them worry.
