With the 3G shutdown here in Australia at the end of this month by Telstra and Optus we need to get out automation service that sends and receives messages to/from clients to work on the newly purchased GL7611 units which are currently working now but in fallback mode.
Tried to contact Semtech support but they advised me to come back here since they were purchased from here.
Connected via serial and got the following output.
**Deleted for sensitive or personal information.
From the research I have done reading over countless third party threads the 3 IMS outputs are showing that it is not operating in 4G mode for VOICE/SMS and it needs to be enabled in some way, this is supposed to be the same as mobile handsets that support LTE data but don’t have VoLTE support wont continue to work after the end of this month.
Is there any way to enable this and any guides that can be followed anywhere ?
Hi @loopster ,
To enable the Sierra Wireless GL7611 modem to operate in 4G mode for voice and SMS when you see that the RRC (Radio Resource Control) state is disconnected and IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) output shows “not registered,” follow these steps:
- Check SIM Card and Network Subscription:
- Ensure that the SIM card is correctly inserted and is properly provisioned for 4G LTE voice and SMS services. Verify that the SIM card is activated for LTE services and supports VoLTE (Voice over LTE).
- Update Firmware and Drivers:
- Ensure that the modem’s firmware and drivers are up-to-date. Manufacturers often release updates that improve connectivity and compatibility. Visit Sierra Wireless’s official website for the latest firmware and drivers for your GL7611 modem.
- Verify APN Settings:
- Access the modem’s configuration interface (usually through a web browser or a dedicated software tool provided by Sierra Wireless) and check the Access Point Name (APN) settings. Ensure that the APN is correctly configured according to your carrier’s requirements.
- Configure VoLTE and IMS Settings:
- VoLTE and IMS support are crucial for voice and SMS over LTE. Use the modem’s configuration tool to verify that VoLTE is enabled. You might need to input specific IMS settings if they are required by your carrier.
- Check Network Modes:
- Ensure that the modem is set to operate in LTE mode. Sometimes, the modem might be defaulting to a 3G or 2G network. Set the network mode to LTE only or LTE preferred, depending on the options available in your modem’s configuration settings.
- Inspect Network Signal and Coverage:
- Ensure you are in an area with good LTE coverage. Poor signal strength can affect the connection and registration process.
- Reset the Modem:
- Perform a factory reset of the modem to clear any misconfigurations. After the reset, reconfigure the modem with the correct settings for your network and services.
- Consult Sierra Wireless Documentation:
- Refer to the Sierra Wireless GL7611 documentation and user manuals for detailed configuration instructions and troubleshooting steps. Sometimes, specific parameters or settings are required for different network environments.
- Contact Carrier Support:
- If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact us. There may be specific carrier settings or issues with your account that need addressing. However we will need to know whether you purchased a SIM card through 1Global / Truphone or RevX.
