Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the Temperature Sensors - NTC Thermistors category on DigiKey.com

NTC Thermistors, or Negative Temperature Coefficient Thermistors, are devices that change resistance in response to changes in temperature. With negative coefficient parts, their resistance decreases as their temperature increases. They are typically defined with variables such as the parts base resistance value at a set temperature, usually 25°C, and B values, the performance curve of temperature vs. resistance calibrated between two fixed points.

SelectionCharacteristics

Specifications to determine which NTC thermistor is right for your application.

Resistance in Ohms @ 25°C: The resistance value of the thermistor when tested at 25oC.

Resistance Tolerance: Characterizes the extent of permitted variability of overall device resistance among samples of a given part number, resulting from variations in manufacturing.

B Value Tolerance: Amount by which actual B (beta) values may deviate from listed values as a result of manufacturing variability.

B0/50: Characterizes a thermistor’s resistance vs. temperature curve, using a two point calibration at 0oC and 50oC.

B25/50: Characterizes a thermistor’s resistance vs. temperature curve, using a two point calibration at 25oC and 50oC.

B25/75: Characterizes a thermistor’s resistance vs. temperature curve, using a two point calibration at 25oC and 75oC.

B25/85: Characterizes a thermistor’s resistance vs. temperature curve, using a two point calibration at 25oC and 85oC.

B25/100: Characterizes a thermistor’s resistance vs. temperature curve, using a two point calibration at 25oC and 100oC.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Power - Max: The maximum amount of power used by the device.

Length - Lead Wire: Indicates length of interconnect wires or cable, for parts equipped therewith.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Package/Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the suppliers device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.
