Temperature sensors are devices that provide readable temperature measurements via an electrical signal. The most basic way to measure temperature is using a thermometer; this measures how hot or cold something is. With advances in technology, we now have access to a variety of temperature sensors that are much more accurate.
There are two main categories when it comes to temperature sensors, depending on the type of application being used or the industry you are working in:
- Contact Temperature Sensors
- Non-contact Temperature Sensors
Contact Temperature Sensors measure the degree of hotness or coldness of an object or substance via direct contact. They are generally used to detect a wide range of temperatures in different solids, liquids, or gases.
Non-contact Temperature Sensors are never in direct contact with an object or substance therefore, they are widely used in hazardous environments such as power plant industries. They measure how hot or cold something is via radiation emitted by a heat source.
Different types of temperature Sensors:
- Thermocouple
- Thermistor
- RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)
- IC Temperature Sensor
- Infra-red Temperature Sensor
Thermocouple
A thermocouple has two wires that contain two dissimilar metals (e.g. copper and constantan) that connect at two different points to form a junction. One point is known as the “cold junction”, kept at a specific temperature, and the other is known as the “hot junction”. When the junction of the two wires experience temperature changes, it generates an electromotive force (EMF). It is this EMF differential between the two wires that records the temperature change. Thermocouples are cost-effective and have an extensive temperature range (-200 °C – 1750 °C).
Key Properties
- Temperature Range: -200°C to +2500°C depending on the type of thermocouple (e.g., Type K, J, T, E, N, R, S, B)
- Accuracy: within ±1°C to ±3°C.
- Working Principle: The Seebeck Effect, which is a phenomenon in which a temperature difference of two dissimilar conductors produces a voltage difference between the two substances.
- Sensitivity: relatively low sensitivity, typically in the range of 10 to 50 µV/°C.
- Fast Response: Thermocouples can respond quickly to changes in temperature, making them suitable for dynamic measurements.
- Cost: Thermocouples are generally inexpensive compared to other types of temperature sensors.
When and where to use Thermocouples:
They are particularly useful in situations where durability, wide temperature range, and fast response time are important. For example:
- Furnaces and Kilns: Monitoring high temperatures in metal production, glass manufacturing, and ceramics.
- Engines and Aircrafts: Measuring exhaust gas temperatures (EGT) to monitor and optimize engine performance. Monitoring turbine and exhaust temperatures in aircrafts.
- Laboratory Experiments: Measuring precise temperatures in chemical reactions and material testing.
- Cooking and Baking: Monitoring temperatures in ovens, fryers, and other cooking equipment.
- Soldering: Monitoring the temperature during soldering processes.
- Semiconductor Fabrication: Controlling temperatures in clean rooms and during chip manufacturing.

Thermistor

RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector)
An RTD (Resistance Temperature Detector) is a type of temperature sensor that measures temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature. They use similar principles to thermistors, but differ in their construction methods and materials. RTDs are known for their accuracy, stability, and wide temperature range. Unlike the thermistor, the change in resistance of RTDs is linearly proportional to temperature. Considerations for Selecting and Designing Temperature Sensors
Different types of sensors work on different operating principles and choosing the sensor for any particular application requires knowledge of that application’s critical specifications such as accuracy, sensitivity, response time, temperature range, and other factors.
Calibration plays an important role in ensuring consistency between the sensor’s output and the actual temperature being measured. Calibration should be performed regularly, especially after prolonged use of the sensor or changes in environmental factors surrounding the system.
Proper shielding should be used to avoid EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) from surroundings. EM interference can significantly change a sensor’s measured values from the actual temperature value specially when high sensitivity is involved.
In the design phase, it’s also crucial to consider how to handle and transmit sensor data, which may involve using microcontrollers, data processing algorithms, and communication protocols.
