Troubleshooting Olimex USB-ISO Compatibility with Windows 11

We received a customer inquiry regarding an issue using the Olimex LTD USB-ISO device with Windows 11 Pro (Version 24H2, OS Build 26100.3476).
The issue is as follows:

  • When connecting a device via USB-ISO, the COM port is not recognized.
  • When connecting the same device directly to the PC (without USB-ISO), the COM port is recognized.
  • The USB-ISO works correctly on a Windows 7 system.

To clarify this issue, we contacted the manufacturer and according to them:

The problem is not in the USB-ISO since USB-ISO doesn’t need drivers. It doesn’t need to be recognized to work.
Just to be 100% sure, they tested USB-ISO with Windows 11 using a simple USB device — a USB flash drive — and it worked as expected.

Possible Causes

  • Some USB ports may not be properly set up (configured for compatibility mode) under Windows 11.
  • The USB cable or USB connectors may be damaged, and they don’t make good contact. The USB cable may also be too long and its line resistance is too high.
  • All USB connectors wear out over time, and frequent plugging/unplugging can lead to bad contact.
  • The device connected through USB-ISO may not have proper drivers for Windows 11.

Recommended Troubleshooting Steps

  • Test with all USB ports on the machine. Sometimes USB 3.0 ports are set up in a way that doesn’t work in compatibility mode.
  • Use a different USB cable: Preferably a newer and shorter cable to ensure good contact and lower resistance.
  • Test USB-ISO with a simpler device, like USB flash memory: Ensure the device you use for the test supports USB 1.1 Full Speed mode (data rate up to 12 Mbps).
