Vibration Proof / Waterproof 12V Automotive relays

Hello,

I have a 1985 Toyota MR2. I installed some LED headlamps awhile ago and bought a subharness from Amazon to convert the plugs from the original 3 pins halogin bulbs to the 3 pin LED.

After driving it around I started noticing that the headlights have been flicking on and off and, in some cases, turning off completely. The subharness came with two relays as part of the wiring and when I shake them the lights flicker.

I installed some other relays and the same thing happened. I know it’s not the wiring as it happens when I tap the relays.

Can you recommend some shockproof and waterproof automotive 12V relays that can withstand the vibration and bumps inevitable while driving? Would solid state ones do this?

The kit contains a 4 pin and 5 pin relay - standard pins 30, 87, 87a, 86 and 85.

Now I am questioning all the relays in the car.

Do you have a part number available for the failed relays?

It would be helpful to know what current carrying capability is needed.

Attached what’s written on the original relays - JD1914 12V 80A and JD1912 12V 80A.

These are way overkill as the wires in the subharness are 14Ga at best and the H6054LED headlights draw 2.3A each.

I then tried 40A relays from this Amazon vendor as I used them a lot around the car. They’re better but the lights still flicker if I tap on them.

80A would be the same, I think 40A or even 20A would work fine here.

Thanks for your help by the way!

Hello Will_F,
Thank you again for posting on our TechForum.
I am sorry to inform you that I could not find a 12V 80amp relay in our system.

How about 12V 40 amp or 12V 20 amp?

Kindly see if the below relays may work for you.

I do however, need to mention that physically tapping on a relay in the horizontal axis could easily get the contact to disengage as it would create significant g-forces. That might not be a great test.

RELAY AUTOMOTIVE SPST 40A 12V A2S1ASQ12VDC1.6

RELAY AUTOMOTIVE SPDT 40A 12V A2S1CSQ12VDC1.6

Thank you for the recommendation. Do you have comparable solid state relays as well?
