I have a Kenwood KA6004 and one side of the Volume Potentiometer appears to be failing. It is shown as a 50k ohm Dual VOLUME (B) BALANCE (M)(N) four gangs, will the PTD904-2015K-C503 work as a suitable replacement? Would new, or different, knobs be needed?
Hello,
Welcome to the DigiKey TechForum. Are you able to remove the potentiometer and post photos of it? Do you have the part number of the original potentiometer we can use to look at the specifications? We need information on the original part in order to compare it to part PTD904-2015K-C503 .
Hello @selmafrog,
That’s a beautiful piece of art!
Negative, the identified control will not work.
The control for the Kenwood KA-6004 is a combined balance and volume control. Also, the volume control appears to have taps that work in conjunction with the loudness control. See partial schematic hosted at https://www.hifiengine.com/.
I’m afraid you are looking for unobtanium.
IMO, your best bet is to try to clean the control using Deoxit products. Before you begin, recommend you research the topic on forums and videos such as this.
Happy soldering,
APDahlen
I previously cleaned it with Deoxit, and it worked well for some time, then one side failed again.
When I am rotating it from full left to full right, or the opposite, there is one point, to the left of center so I think it is not the detent, which has a click. It has a slight bump feel to it.
So, while cleaning it does work for some time, my concern is that it will fail completely at some time in the near future.
Would this be something where I could obtain another 50k pot and replace the suspect one? Even if it means tearing apart a relatively new volume control to remove one pot.
I can take pics of it with the cover removed, and I suppose I could work it out of the panel to expose all of it - if needed.
When you ask for the part number, are you asking for the Kenwood part number, or a number which may be stamped, or printed, on some part of the control?
Hello,
Thanks for the photo. That’s exactly what I was looking for unfortunately I found no options to offer as a replacement to this. I can only suggest shopping around to see if you can purchase another KA 6004 for spare parts or watching this video to see is this is an option you may want to try.
Thank you for the reply.
