CODECS

This Product Selection Guide contains information to help select products in the CODECS category on DigiKey.com

CODECs are semiconductor devices used to transform data by compression and decompression. Data compression provides improved transmission speeds and reduced storage space. Some CODECs provide up to 32 bits of resolution and as many as six or eight analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters respectively. Sigma-Delta modulation is available as well as I2C, I2S, SPI, Serial, HDA, S/DIF, PCM, USB, AC’97, and SLIMbus data interfaces.

SelectionCharacteristics

Type: Indicates the style and configuration of the device.

Data Interface: Indication of which interface(s) or protocol(s) are used by the device to communicate with other components in the system.

Resolution (Bits): The length of the digital word used by a device to represent a continuously variable physical quantity.

Number of ADCs / DACs: Indicates the number of data converter cores present in the device, may differ from channel count due to multiplexing.

Sigma Delta: Indicates whether or not the device incorporates a sigma-delta ADC converter as part of its internal circuitry.

S/N Ratio, ADCs / DACs (db) Typ: Manufacturer’s characterization of typical Signal to Noise ratio performance for the data converters integrated within a device.

Dynamic Range, ADCs / DACs (db) Typ: The difference in amplitude between the largest and smallest signals the device can measure or produce (Typical values, under manufacturer-defined test conditions).

Voltage - Supply, Analog: Describes the permitted operating range of the supply voltage required for powering the analog portion of a mixed-signal device. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.

Voltage - Supply, Digital: Describes the permitted operating range of the supply voltage required for powering the digital portion of a mixed-signal device. Voltages outside this range may damage the device and other system components.

Operating Temperature: Recommended operating temperature, typically given in a range or as a maximum. Exceeding these temperatures may affect performance or damage the device and other system components.

Mounting Type: Indicates how the device is attached.

Package / Case: Indicates the type of protective case used on an electronic component to allow easy handling, installation, and protection. This selection was determined to be the closest industry standard applicable to the supplier device packaging. Typically it is best to check the actual dimensions from the datasheet rather than depend on this terminology when designing your circuit.

Supplier Device Package: This is what the manufacturer calls the package of this device. They are manufacturer specific. It is typically best to use the actual dimensions from the datasheets rather than use this terminology when designing your circuit.
